I grew up in Rainier Vista, a low-income housing project in Seattle. I was fortunate to be surrounded by powerful women and a supportive community that motivated me to aspire for more. As a non-traditional college student and a mother of two, I first attended Highline Community College and later transferred to Seattle University to receive a B.A. in Political Science. From watching my mother train at a community college to become an educator to having mentors who taught me about racial injustice, education has played a pivotal role in shaping the person that I am today as well as my politics. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed. Those opportunities should start with strong public schools, a growing economy to support our small businesses, property tax relief, and better transportation systems. It also means that women’s issues must be brought to the forefront of Greater Seattle and South King County, and I will continue to advocate for that. My family, my community and my country are what drive me to fight for the 47th. I currently serve on the Renton Technical College Board of Trustees, and am a proud member of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. As citizens and consumers, we have the right to keep our identities and data private, and understand how our data is being used and monetized. This misuse of data and exploitation of digital consumer rights is leading to companies profiting off of our personal information, our identities being stored in surveillance databases, and an increase in racial biases in law enforcement due to false identifications. With facial recognition software falsely identifying faces of people of color 10 to 100 times more than their white counterparts (Metz and Singer, 2019), more people of color will be mistakenly facing unwarranted interrogations, police encounters and arrests – only magnifying existing issues of racial discrimination (Brill, 2020). While farmers are facing surpluses of food with no buyers, thousands of small businesses have been temporarily closed or permanently shut down. Both have been left with insurmountable amounts of debt without the resources to help their businesses stay afloat. We need to invest in stronger infrastructure that prioritizes integrity in our food quality, relationships with food growers, and local business vendors.
